Greetings Classmates.
We start
off this month by sending out best wishes for a Happy Anniversary to
Pat (Travers) and Ed Freydendahl. We are not aware of any birthdays
being celebrated this month.
If you
haven't already done so, why not notify us of your birth date and/or
wedding anniversary date for inclusion on the webpage.
MYSTERY PHOTO -
Unfortunately, we haven't received a picture for our mystery photo this
month.
From
Grand Rapids, Michigan, this news from
Carole
(Topp) Korfker:
I worked at Calvin College in the Service Learning Center for 19
years and retired from there about 8 years ago. It was a nice job
where I came in contact with lots of students over the years placing
them in volunteer positions in the city and also did the data entry
of their volunteer hours which was helpful on their resume'. Now
I do volunteering myself. Bill and I are drivers for the Meals at
Home project which is organized through our church with the meals
provided by a nearby hospital. We deliver meals to homebound folks
at least three times a month. Plus, I am a route coordinator for
Meals at Home which involves assigning about 18 people to cover
my route as drivers each month. This gets a little difficult when
the "snow birds" head south for the winter and I am short of drivers.
That means extra filling in myself.
A year ago we sold the house we lived in for 32 years and moved
a couple blocks away to Beacon Hill At Eastgate Retirement Community.
We've been enjoying living here very much and are always involved
in something. Lots of programs are available to us including educational,
musical, exercise etc. Bill is still working part time for United
Bank as a courier. He enjoys doing this, even on snow covered roads.
We have 8 grandchildren. The oldest, a stepgrandchild, works as
a Chef Assistant after recently graduating from a culinary school
in Vermont. The others are ages 6 - 13 with one set of twins in
there. Our son and family live about 12 miles from us and our daughter
and family live only about 3 blocks away. The grandkids all love
to come here, especially to use the indoor swimming pool.
We have a cottage on Lake Michigan about 1 1/4 hours away. The house
sits high on a sand dune and we have a beautiful view of the lake.
It's great for family get-togethers such as birthday celebrations,
holiday weekends together and also for some relaxation time for
just the two of us. Our whole family spent Thanksgiving weekends
up there a few times where we could be found playing games and doing
jigsaw puzzles and the brave ones playing on the beach.
Donna
(Chewning) Rabenow wrote us to say:
Last Sunday, a group of us who over the years have participated
in a "Slendersize" class of Christy Waltons here in Ahwatukee (I
first went in 1981), got together for an annual hike (about 3 miles
roundtrip) into South Mountain Park (Phoenix). I'm attaching our
picture from this years hike, we're all somewhat older now, but
our legs are still working. I'm sure you can recognize me. I'm on
the far left (looking at the picture), in the yellow sweatshirt.
Christy is the one with the yellow visor.
Finally,
still as active and busy as ever, Ingrid (Storch) O'Brien sent along
this news about what she has been doing for the past several months.
Ingrid writes ...
The renovation of an old barn. More then I had expected. Lots of
problems. Lots more rot than expected, foundation work, building
leaning some 2" and therefore putting in doors, windows and siding
so the building looks straight, another problem, etc, etc. I am
not sorry I took this on, but it will take another year to finish.
No work being done this winter.
The 100's of bats in the barn that had to be removed before renovation.
We plugged up most of the holes and openings in the barn and also
put a tube in the bat hole entrance. The tube would permit the bats
to fly out but not come back in. After some 3 weeks all the bats
were gone. Bless their little hearts. We never found a dead bat,
so the move was successful. They did not go into the bat house provided,
however, we think they just moved into another barn and that's okay.
All of my info came from The Bat Institute in Minnesota and it worked.
The walnut tree grove needs to be thinned of small trees. Some 300
trees out of 1,000. When I asked the forester what I should do with
these small trees, he told me to put them on a burn pile. I knew
that was not going to happen, if I could help it. Have had benches
made in the past from small walnut trees and they were lovely. In
fact, I sold 3. The plan now is to have the trees milled right in
the grove as we take them down. It will take some organizing, but
it can be done. Then I will store the lumber in a barn to dry. Hope
to have more furniture made or be more creative in the future with
the wood.
As of next spring I will have bees. They will be located down at
the creek by the walnut trees. Have a bee keeper that will attend
to the hives, etc. I was shocked when I found out that I would be
getting Italian and Russian Bees. I asked the bee keeper if I could
have some American Bees and he told me there were none. I need to
do some research, but for the time being I believe him.
Life is good and I find keeping busy, for me, is the key. I like
the challenges, the learning and hope to be around to see some of
these projects completed.
And
here is a bit of news about a fellow Ramapo alum:
Gregory Edward Schiano (born June 1, 1966) is an American football
coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the National
Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a position he assumed in
January 2012. Schiano was born and grew up in Wyckoff, New Jersey,
and attended Ramapo High School. He then attended Bucknell University,
where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, and graduated
in 1988 with a B.S. in business administration.
In his playing career at Bucknell University, he was a three-year
letterman at linebacker. In his junior year, he led his team with
114 tackles and was named to the All-Conference team. In his senior
year, he was named team captain, and was named to The Sporting News
Pre-season All-American Team.
Schiano began his coaching career in 1988 as an assistant coach
at Ramapo High School. In 1989, he served as a graduate assistant
at Rutgers. In 1990, he took the same position at Penn State, and
later served as the defensive backfield coach there from 1991 until
1995. From 1996 to 1998, Schiano was an assistant coach in the NFL
with the Chicago Bears. For his first two seasons there, he was
a defensive assistant, and then was promoted in his third and final
season with the Bears to defensive backfield coach. Schiano served
as defensive coordinator for the University of Miami from 1999 to
2000. On December 1, 2000, Schiano accepted the head coaching position
